What are the non-attorney fee costs of filing a Chapter 7 ?

If you’re looking to file your own Bankruptcy, or shopping around for the lowest fees, be aware that there are fixed costs to file a Chapter 7.

  1. The Court filing fee is currently $335.  The fee can be paid in four installments of $83.75 after filing if the court grants a motion to  pay the fees in installments.
  2. Credit Counseling – depending on the service the cost varies from 7.95 to $40.00 per person.  If your income is at 150% of poverty level or less the credit counseling agencies are supposed to provide this service for free.
  3. Debtor Education Course – $7.95 to $40.00 per person.
  4. Credit Report – this can be free by going to a Free Credit Report site.
  5. Additional costs can include postage for serving amendments, parking attending hearings for reaffirmation agreement, procuring copies of recorded mortgages and deeds.
